How Do I Start Service Learning?

FACULTY

  1. Become familiar with service learning as a teaching tool by:
    1. Talking with a colleague who is offering service learning at MECC or other colleges.
    2. Researching service learning via the web, books on service learning
    3. Checking out MECC's Service-Learning Resources (i.e.: web links through this web page)
    4. Considering a class you currently offer, examining the goals, comparing them to service learning goals, and seeing how the two mesh.
    5. Considering how your particular discipline can incorporate service learning and research agencies on the database to check compatibility.
  2. Once you've determined that service learning can be a valuable teaching tool, access the Site Placement Database and consider 1-3 sites. After you've done this awhile, you may increase the number of sites.
  3. Once you've developed goals for a class incorporating service learning, contact the site agency and speak to them. (click here to view Site Placement Database)
  4. Be committed.
  5. Look at sample syllabi (i.e. Rural Sociology) for examples of goals. (click here to view Model Syllabi)
    1. Develop syllabi with key components and responsibilities in mind. Pay particular attention to evaluation.
    2. Submit your syllabi to the Service Learning Coordinator in Student Services for placement on the web page. (click here to view Key Components of Service-Learning to help develop syllabi)
  6. See how others have incorporated service learning here at MECC.
  7. Consider which model of service learning you want to follow:
    1. Is it a major requirement? (click here to view Service Learning Model
    2. Is it extra credit?
  8. Contact the Service Learning Coordinator in Student Services, your Division Chair, or one of your peers for further information and arrange a meeting.

STUDENT

  1. Check the MECC Class Schedule to determine which service learning courses are being offered.
  2. Choose the service learning course(s) you wish to take.

  4. Consider how your particular field of interest would benefit from taking a service learning course by familiarizing yourself with all aspects of Service-Learning.
