MECC student receives scholarship recognition
Mountain Empire Community College student Kristen Roberts is the recipient of the R. C. and Marti Shelton Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship.
This $3,000 scholarship goes to a first-time college student with a commitment to leadership. Roberts is a 2009 graduate of Coeburn High School majoring in business. While in high school she was on the PACE scholastic team, a member of the National Honor Society and Ecology Club, editor of the year book, and president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Each of the 23 community colleges in Virginia nominate a philanthropic leader in whose name the Scholarship is named each year. R. C. “Snook” and Marti Shelton of Pennington Gap are long-time supporters of MECC, with Snook having served on the MECC Foundation for seventeen years.
Roberts, with fellow recipients, was recognized on November 12, at the annual meeting of the Virginia Community College System in Richmond. Also in attendance were MECC President Terrance Suarez and MECC Foundation Director Donna Stanley.

MECC student Kristen Roberts of Coeburn stands with Glenn DuBois, Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, at the annual recognition of VCCS student recipients of the Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship.
