“Community colleges play an important role in helping people transition between careers by providing the retooling they need to take on a new career.“
Career services assist students with career goals.
The counselor uses interviews, counseling sessions and aptitude testing to evaluate a student’s interests, strengths, and skills. Students coming to career services will also be advised of educational and training requirements for careers. Students may be assisted with developing job search skills, resume and cover letter preparation, interview skills, and locating a job.
The career counselor may provide limited academic counseling, but the purpose of career counseling is to guide students in an informational gathering process about self and the world of work to determine which academic programs or careers might be a good match for them. For many students, meeting with a career counselor is the first step in the career development process.
The Career Center
The career counselor schedules a variety of activities in the Career Center/Cyber Café throughout the year related to various career opportunities and lifestyle improvements. The Career Center seminars and workshops can assist students with developing job and internship search strategies, transferring to four-year schools, developing a resume, building interview skills, conducting mock interviews, and networking with professionals in the field. The Career Center is located in Holton Hall (H108) and is available from 8:00am until 2:00pm daily.
