Recruitment of members for 2012-2013 grant year* NOW

Must be a student at MECC, a US citizen or permanen resident alien and age        17 yrs. or older. (No upper limit.)
Program year will begin Sept. 1, 2012 and end Aug. 31, 2013.*

Description
of Service: Members provide 900 hours of service over the period of the grant year. Members serve as literacy tutors for children in Pre-K to 6th grade primary or elementary public schools in Wise Co., Lee Co. and the City of Norton.  Members receive a Living Allowance of approx. $225.34 every two weeks (minus taxes) of active service, a scholarship of $250 (total $500) in the Fall and in the Spring; and three additional scholarships of $222 each in December, May and August to use as you like. Upon completion of successful service, member is eligible for the Segal Education Award of $2,775 that is held in trust by the Corporation for National and Community Service for up to 7 years. The Segal Education Award can be used for educational expenses to any accredited college in the nation or to repay a qualifying student loan. AmeriCorps service is also a great addition to one's resume.

Organization: Foster Grandparents Program
Organization Description:Sponsored by M.E.O.C. and based in Big Stone Gap, VA., the Foster Grandparents Program is funded by the Corporation for National & Community Service and has been in operation locally since 1997.
Volunteer Description: Senior citizens who are age 55 and older, have a limited income, and love to work with children can be assigned to work with special needs children in schools, Head Starts, and childcare facilities in Lee, Scott, and Wise Counties and the City of Norton. Enrolled volunteers will receive a stipend, travel reimbursement, and other benefits which does not interfere with current income.
Hours: Volunteers may serve 15 - 40 hours per week. Locations: Lee, Scott and Wise Counties and the city of Norton.
Additional Information: Interested people will need to fill out an application, go through a screening process, and orientation before possibly being placed in an assignment.

Organization: Southwest Virginia Medical Reserve Corps
Description:The Southwest Virginia Medical Reserve Corps is a cadre of volunteer health care professionals and community members trained to respond and assist with public health crises and public health activities in LENOWISCO, Cumberland Plateau and Mount Rogers Health Districts. The SWVA MRC is one of 941 units in the national network of the Office of the Civilian Medical Reserve Corps.
Description: Volunteers have the opportunity take advantage of a wide-range of preparedness training classes, participate in exercises, assist with public health promotion and activities, and most importantedly be available during a crisis.

Description of Agency:Lonesone Pine Office on Youth is a youth development and youth delinquincy prevention agency.

Organization: American Red Cross, Mountain Empire Chapter

Description of Agency: The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
Description of Volunteer Need: Volunteers are needed to train and be available to help respond to disaster, both on the local level and during larger National disasters. Training can be set for any group of 8 or more or contact us to have your name put on a training list.

Organization: The Clinch Coalition
Description: The Clinch Coalition is a grassroots organization founded in 1998 “to protect and preserve the forest, wildlife and water sheds of the Clinch Ranger District of the Jefferson National Forest and surrounding areas.”  Our work focuses specifically on High Knob, a 4,223 foot mountain which stretches into three counties and is at the heart of the Clinch Valley Bioreserve, a 2,200 square mile area that has been designated by The Nature Conservancy as one of the Last Great Places in the World. The gradient of forest communities between the Clinch River and High Knob is home to more rare and endangered aquatic and botanical species than any other region in the continental U.S.

Event: Trail Restoration
Description: Clearing trails on the National Forest of trees and branches and repairing the trails as needed.
Dates: year round.

Location: High Knob and other locations in the Jefferson National Forest

Organization: CASA of Wise, Scott and Lee Counties
Description: The CASA Program represents children in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Many of these children are victims of abuse or neglect and their placement is determined by the court system. CASA Volunteers are trained to provide emotional support and to represent the child’s best interests.
Dates: CASA operates year round.

Event Hours: Hours are flexible, however, CASA volunteers should be available for court hearings pertaining to the children on their caseload.
Location: CASA serves Lee, Scott, and Wise Counties. Cases can be assigned based on a volunteer’s preference for locality.

Additional Information: CASA volunteers must be at least 21 years of age and must pass a thorough background check before taking any cases. CASA volunteers undergo 30-40 hours of training and are screen closely for objectivity, competence, and commitment. Please call 276-679-2272 for more information.

Description: At Natural Tunnel State Park, volunteers are needed to help assist with staffing the Visitors' Center, Contact Station, Cove Ridge Center and with interpretation during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Many volunteers are needed as well throughout the year to help with varied service projects at the Park.

Event Name: Keeping Wise County Beautiful
Organization:
Keep Wise County Beauty (KWCB) services include the Adopt-A-Spot/Street Program, abandoned vehicle removal program and litter hotline — 276/328-1000 to report littering and illegal dumping.
Event Description:
The executive committee of Keep Wise County Beautiful, KWCB, is recruiting members to share in leadership roles to help promote litter control and recycling around the county. Committee membership provides the opportunity for citizens to help plan and organize a wide variety of projects and events, from teaching environmental awareness to being a coordinator for clean up efforts in a specific community or town. On a smaller scale, committee members can opt to help on a single project or event instead.
